In February 2007, a delegation of 28 university students set out to document Jewish sites in Mumbai, India and in its surrounding areas as part of the “Journey into Jewish Heritage” project run by the Zalman Shazar Center for Jewish History and funded by the Avi Chai Foundation.

Out of the two Jewish communities in Mumbai – “Bene Israel” and the “Baghdadi Jewish Community” – the students decided to focus on documenting the “Bene Israel” community, which is the larger of the two.
